One of the easiest ways to overcome scrapbooker's block is by starting with a sketch.
If you've ever sat down at your craft table surrounded by beautiful papers and photos but had no idea where to begin, scrapbook sketches can provide the perfect starting point. They give you a framework while still allowing plenty of room for creativity.
In this week's Sketch Sunday, I used Sketch #35 from the 101 Scrapbooking Ideas & Sketches book and transformed it into a beautiful double-page scrapbook layout using the Celestial Delights collection from Creative Memories.
Scrapbook sketches take the guesswork out of designing a page. Instead of wondering where photos, embellishments, and papers should go, the basic design is already mapped out for you.
The best part?
You don't have to follow the sketch exactly.
The original sketch was designed for just a few photos, but by making a few adjustments, I was able to create a layout that holds eight photos while still maintaining balance and visual interest.
For scrapbookers who want to complete more albums and spend less time staring at blank pages, sketches are one of the best tools available.
The Celestial Delights collection was originally released as Secret Box #1 and quickly became a favorite among scrapbookers.
The collection features:
Foil-accented papers
Celestial designs
Moon and star embellishments
Coordinating Border Maker Cartridge
Rich navy, gold, and metallic color palettes
The foil paper became the star of this layout. By using it as a photo mat and accent layer, it helped draw attention to the photos while adding just the right amount of sparkle.
Many scrapbookers struggle with fitting enough photos onto a page.
Instead of limiting myself to the original sketch design, I adjusted the photo placements and reduced some of the matting dimensions. This allowed me to fit eight photos onto the layout without making it feel crowded.
When you're creating scrapbook layouts, remember that sketches are guidelines—not rules.
You can:
Add more photos
Move embellishments
Change paper sizes
Flip the design
Adapt it for different themes
That's what makes sketches so versatile.
One of my favorite tools from Creative Memories is the Border Maker System.
For this layout, I used the coordinating Celestial Delights Border Maker Cartridge to create decorative borders that added movement and interest across the page.
Border punches are an easy way to create custom embellishments and make a layout feel more polished without requiring complicated techniques.
If you own Border Maker Cartridges that haven't seen much use lately, pull them out and experiment with them on your next layout.
Can we talk about scrapbook paper hoarding for a minute?
You know the paper.
The one that's so pretty you don't want to cut into it.
I admit it—I do it too.
The foil paper from this collection was one of those papers for me. But scrapbooking supplies are meant to be used and enjoyed. Once I started cutting and layering the paper throughout the layout, it became one of my favorite parts of the finished design.
The memories deserve the pretty paper.
My favorite part of this layout is how it took a simple scrapbook sketch and turned it into something completely different.
The original design was intended for just a few photos, but by making a few adjustments, I was able to fit eight photos while still keeping the layout balanced and visually appealing. That's one of the reasons I love working with scrapbook sketches—they give you a starting point, but the finished layout becomes uniquely yours.
I also finally cut into one of my favorite papers from the Celestial Delights collection. If you're a scrapbooker, you probably know exactly what I'm talking about. We all have those papers that feel too pretty to use, so they sit in our stash waiting for the "perfect" project.
This layout reminded me that the memories are the perfect project.
The foil accents, celestial patterns, and custom border punch details came together to create a layout that feels magical, elegant, and fun. More importantly, they helped tell the story behind the photos.
That's what scrapbooking is really about—not saving supplies for someday, but using them to preserve the moments that matter most.
Are you someone who uses your favorite papers right away, or do you save them because they're too pretty to cut?
